The changing times of blogging

What is blogging?

Blogging is a form of self-publishing on the internet where a person or company shares ideas, opinions, and information through articles or posts. Blogs were started in the 1990s as an informal communication tool for companies.

Blogging has become a phenomenon over the last decade. Blogs have changed the way people share information and created a support system for people who are struggling with a particular topic. Whether you’re an entrepreneur, freelancer, or stay-at-home mum, blogging provides you with an outlet to share your thoughts and passions with the world. Blogging also creates a support system for people who are struggling with a particular topic or are looking for advice on how to deal with their current situation.

Blogs are often thought of as online diaries, but they can be used to share any kind of information that you might like – from recipes to tutorials on how to fix your car. They can also be used as a platform for businesses and brands to get their message out there and connect with customers on a more intimate level.

What is my blogging history?

Blogging has changed in the last 15 years.  I was fortunate enough to start one of the founder sites for netmums.com  The founders paid a small sum for one parent in each town to create a website on things to do, places to see and other children’s activities.  It was a lot of work for what was a relatively small sum, but for me as a stay at home parent, it was a real lifeline.  I had lots of fun creating the website, including learning how to use Dreamweaver!  No blogging platforms in those days!  It was a real learning curve for me, and I made many friends doing it.

I then moved areas so couldn’t do the local netmums site anymore, I did however love working online.  I was looking for something to do when my older child was at school, but that I would be able to do within nap times around my baby.  Broadband wasn’t even popular then – I had to use dial up and if anyone rang during the day they would hear the engaged tone!  It seems just crazy now.  I created a parenting website, which got a fair amount of traffic.  These were the days of forums, not so much Facebook.  So my parenting forum got traffic and then my website did too.  I was able to use it to show my readership new products, health and parenting information, and lots more.

Did I make any money?  Not a bean!  However at the time there were no blogging opportunity platforms or Instagram influencers.  I did however have a great time with that website, and was able to do product reviews which was a great benefit, particularly with toys at Christmas!  I sadly closed that website when I went to work full time – something I regret daily.  Then I went to work full time just as vlogging and Instagram was about to take off.

Blogging is an easy way to make money – myth!

In the past, people used to write blogs because they had something of value or experience to share with others. Few people would do it for the sole purpose of making money, but over time this has started to change. Blogging is like any other profession – it requires dedication, discipline and knowledge. The amount of success someone has as a blogger depends on their commitment and the quality of their content.

There are many ways to make money from blogging but these are some of the most popular:

-Selling your own products or services that you promote on your blog

Affiliate marketing

-Doing sponsored posts for companies

-Writing guest posts for other blogs

What about being an influencer?

These individuals can be considered celebrities, athletes, politicians, CEOs or even internet personalities. We all have our own favourite influencers who we admire for their work and strive to emulate.  Influencers are a valuable resource for brands and companies because they have an impact on our society and culture. They have the power to make products popular just by the simple act of endorsing them on social media through pictures or a quick video .Influencers are a powerful addition to any company’s marketing team.

They have their own loyal following and can bring your product or service into the spotlight for more people to see. The power of influencers is not just in the number of followers they have, but in their ability to convert those followers into customers. They offer value by providing content that is relevant to their followers.  Here is a great example of a popular and successful influencer.

Tiktok is a really popular platform now, where users make funny or interesting videos.  It was first thought of as a place for teenagers to do silly dances – not any more!  More and more businesses are using Tiktok to promote their product or service.

How to gain followers?

You have to have relevant and interesting content.  If you want to be a foodie influencer then you need to be posting great pictures of food!  If you want to be a mummy influencer then of course you need to talk about your children.  I can’t pretend to know lots about Instagram and its many algorithms but there are lots of great courses out there to learn.

How can I get this started?

I’d recommend looking at other blogs and learning about what you need to do first.  A great course is this one which talks about everything from creating your blog name, to figuring out social media and content.  The same company have a great deal at the moment where you can buy all of their courses in one – I’d say it was worth it and you will make your money back.  You also need to look at what companies want – if you want to make money then you need to tailor yourself to their requirements.  Here are some great tips on how PR companies pick their influencers.
