You’re going to be a dad!

First of all, congratulations. If you have found this page, its because you have just found out that you are going to be a dad. Exciting times – with lots to learn too. There are loads of great resources out there for new mums, but dads are still a bit further behind.

We have been reading a fantastic book, by the creator of the fabulous Daddilife website, which is one of the best resources we have seen for new dads. Its important to realise in any pregnancy, that you (of course) have to be there for your partner. She is seeing her body change, and her moods alter. There may be some health issues to consider too. The best thing you can do to support your partner is to listen, and to learn. Reading this book will teach you everything you need to know about the pregnancy, and all of the issues that come with it. And the great bits too!

It takes you through the whole journey, from first trimester right to early babyhood. I’d suggest using the book as a bit of a bible – read through it first, then at any point you are stuggling with something, look up the relevant section. For example, month one takes you through what is happening in your partners body, and what she will be feeling like. Each section has a helpful checklist too – including which vitamins she should be taking, ideas for questions to ask the doctor, or just some tips on how to start your birth plan.

There are also snippets of information from 50 different dads, that have been interviewed as part of the book. No-one can give you better advice than someone who has been through it. The dads comments are often heartfelt, but sometimes humorous too. Humour can often get you through the most stressful of situations!

You will also learn all of the terminology you will need to help you at your doctors appointments. This is a really great feature as it means you can just look up any confusing words.

One of the many great things about this book, is that each section also concentrates on how you, as a new dad, is feeling. At each stage there will be something new that you need help with. Perhaps its struggling to see your partner in this new light, or worrying about feeling pushed out. The book picks out key issues like this and gives great advice to help you. New mums are given lots of support, as they should be, but you are important too. If you feel like you are struggling in any way, seek help.

As a new dad, you need to make sure you are looking after yourself, your partner and your new baby. Its a lot of work! Keep asking questions, reading the book, looking on great websites like Daddilife. And above all, enjoy the ride!

You can buy “You’re Going To Be A Dad” here, be sure to let us know what you think of the book. We have included some images from the Kindle version here so you can see clearly. The book is in black and white, more than 400 pages long, and is just perfect for dipping in and out of. We recommend keeping it with you at work for any emergency phone calls!
